Day in the life of delta pilot1/9/2024 ![]() Trapped American troops soon faced withering fire from thousands of Aidid's fighters, who surrounded them on all sides. ![]() 'Published to mark the battle's 25th anniversary and using recently declassified documents and new interviews with many of the participants, Day of the Rangers is a fascinating and revealing new history of a battle that would influence American Special Forces for decades to come. 'Focusing on the stories of the soldiers on the ground, and in the air, Day of the Rangers reveals the experiences and recollections of the Special Forces units, including the Rangers, Delta operators and Nightstalker crews who fought in the battle of Mogadishu. With a hastily organized relief column many hours away, the American troops faced a desperate battle for survival. They quickly found themselves under heavy fire, and two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. Special Forces troops were transported by ground vehicles and helicopters, and the mission was meant to be over within the hour. Publishers Osprey describe his book as: 'On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger was dispatched to seize two high-profile lieutenants of a Somali warlord. His title Day of The Rangers seeks to give a fresh perspective on the battle on its 25th anniversary. 'I saw a Ranger across the street get hit and go down.'Īlthough the events of the Battle of Mogadishu are well told, Australian military historian Leigh Neville interviewed survivors for his new book. 'Many times the Somalis would simply stick their weapon around the corner and fire off a magazine in our general direction without aiming. 'We could hear a sonic crack of bullets passing down the street but very rarely could we see the actual shooters. 'We took advantage of cover as best we could while moving down the street, but we took casualties anyway. 'My peripheral vision was diminishing because of the blood loss - from that point also my vision was black and white, I didn't see colour anymore.' 'I told myself 'I don't have time for this nonsense, I'm too busy'. 'The Rangers are trying to get me off the vehicle and I was still shooting. 'All of a sudden, it was like a hot hammer hit me in the leg, it was like a hot poker. 'I could see a gun around the corner of a wall so I took off the side of the wall with the Mk19. ![]() Sergeant First Class Paul Leonard on being shot in the leg: 'General Garrison said 'Gary, do you know what you're asking for? 'The last time they call, Master Sergeant Gary Gordon, the Delta team leader, got on the radio and called General Garrison and said 'Sir, you've got to put us in'. 'General Garrison told me this years later three times they called, three times permission was denied to put Super 62 in. 'The other sniper Black Hawk, Super 62, calls up on the radio and requests permission to put their three Delta snipers into the crash site to defend it because they can see the crowds starting to build there.
